In his youth, Sir Philip had developed a life-long friendship for the Lord Lovel, military duties had separated them and Sir Philip had stopped receiving answers to his letters to Lord Lovel/5.

The Old English Baron is an early Gothic novel by the English author Clara was first published under this title inalthough it had anonymously appeared in under its original name of The Champion of Virtue, before Samuel Richardson's daughter, Mrs Bridgen, had edited it for her.

Apart from typographical errors, the revision was : Clara Reeve. Walpole's annoyance with The Old English Baron was understandable. Reeve frankly admitted that her book was "the literary offspring of The Castle of Otranto" and was clearly trying to improve upon Walpole's work.
